2 years agoAll games I ever make wil have “no rules.” Why? What are the best sports? Vale tudo fighting (cred: the Gracies), No rules beeramid (cred: Baghdadi), Blitz ball (cred: finny). Do those games have rules? Of course they don’t.
3 years agoI just finished The Night of the Gun by David Carr (which is excellent, by the way), at the end of which Carr mentions that while writing the book he listened to the song “Chillout Tent” by The Hold Steady a whole lot. I immediately found the song on my ipod and listened to it approximately 22 times on repeat. It’s a truly excellent song in its own right AND it features vocals by the dude from Soul Asylum. It is about a couple people at a festival who can’t handle their shit and end up sitting in the medical tent and sucking face. The lyrics do a good job of reminding you of all those times when it seems like something major is about to happen and then it doesn’t. At one point the girl in song says “he was kinda cool, we kinda kicked it in the chillout tent,” and the double use of “kinda” struck me as great because it’s a word that we all use too often, especially the phrase “kinda cute” to describe someone we’ve kissed or want to kiss or want our friend to kiss.
This led me to realize that qualifications are vital in interactions but the phrase word “kinda” just allows me to be vauge and not take a stand on something. I am going to remove kinda from my vocabulary. I will still qualify thing I say, but I will do it explicitly. The new Matt and Kim jam is pretty sweet but it kinda disappoints me. No. Fuck that. The New Matt and Kim jam is catchy as hell but won’t fit in with their live show which is my favorite thing about them so I’m nervous that if the whole album feels like that, their shows won’t be too fun anymore.
